Every year, some of our closest friends get together and have a Christmas gift exchange. It’s a White Elephant gift exchange, so there’s really no telling what gift you’ll get. We’ve been doing it for a few years, and it has been getting better each year. We put a rule in place last year that you have to actually MAKE what you bring to the gift exchange. Things get really creative. This year I decided I would write a short story about some of my closest friends. It was pretty good, and David read it to us all after the gift exchange, which did the story some real justice.I figured I’d go ahead and post the short story for the world to see! So without further delay… enjoy! (more…)

It’s been 4 months since we’ve blogged. This was supposed to become our primary source of income! It’s okay though - I’ve got a new idea. Starting immediately, we’re going to charge $5 per post. So if you want us to pour the details of our intimate, juicy, lucrative personal lives (and believe me, I need you to want that) into this blog, send $5 to my Paypal account!Just kidding though, our love is free. So here’s what has happened during our vacation from blug blug:

I purchased one 2007 Mini Cooper S.

Since that time, it has been wrecked and repaired at $5000.

For the record - I am innocent!

I went on tour with David Shultz and The Skyline with an awesome guy named Sean Walsh from New York. In fact, we’ll be touring with him again in February 2008.

Took a trip to the pumpkin patch, got some gords, and carved them up.

Got VIP passes to Hanson at Toads Place!

We hosted our 4th annual Thanksgiving gathering, yielding 6 different stuffing variations and one incredible turkey.

It’s important to note that the turkey was soaked in a brine for 12 hours, and baked for 5 hours with a fine apple/onion/cinnamon blend INSIDE OF IT!!!

Visible proof of these incredible events below:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattrock/2066521215/" title="Hanson!

As is my newest custom, I’m writing a blog about something that happened nearly two weeks ago. The idea is to remember as little as possible about what I’m writing about. It makes blogging more of a challenge. The challenge tonight was remembering what trip we recently went on. I poured myself a nice glass of wine, sat down in the living room, and started preparing for my blog about our most recent trip. I realized I had already written about New York. What was left? Where did I spend an entire week, 7 days even, recently?

Ahha! Nags Head, North Carolina (RAISE UP!)

We took Diana’s car because my Jeep is not the workhorse it once was. In fact, of the four of us that live here - 3 separate cars were driven. To think - the mountains of recycling we put out every other week was completely cancelled out by our need to drive separately. But at least we’re canceling shit out!

I could provide a full summary of all events throughout the week but that would be:

Way boring for anyone who wasn’t there.

Way too much work.

So instead, I’ll give you… all of the highlights!

Diana and Sandy were in this knitting competition. And although they won’t admit it, they were both risking arthritis to see who could knit the largest quantity of this incredibly elaborate stitch. I think Diana won, but I don’t want to get caught in the middle of it. Plus, I’m biased. Brownie points.

Grant taught me how to surf! I tried last year but nearly got my torso ripped apart by a mass group of sharks. Well, this spring I studied sharkology and found that punching them in their stupid noses will cause them to back off. So Grant and I spent several days learning the motion of the ocean. He was awesome. He was always hanging out with this group of other surfers who were too embarrassed to surf near me. Because of my cult-like shark following.

Anne Spraker, AKA Bacon Spraker, who is a frequent reader of this blog, and David Shultz (of The Skyline) came down and invited us to one of their properties. I was promised there was a Dacquiri Machine. I don’t know where that came from, because there was only a blender with Pina Colada freezer mixes. But we played this awesome game called… Catch Phrase. It’s a permanent staple in our friend group game collection.

Grant, David and myself took a trip down to Cape Hatteras. My buddy Mike Lester’s parents have a restaurant in Buxton called Finnegans. We ate their foods, which were glorious, then went fishing at the Frisco Pier. It was amazing - we caught NOTHING. Nothing but crabs.

Carla Mathews and I basically slaughtered all opponents in Scrabble. This happens a lot, we’re kind of like the Lance Armstrong of Scrabble. The funny thing is, I didn’t have to be present for much of the game - major stomach problems (the details of which I will pleasantly omit).

That’s all I have for now. There’s more, but this isn’t a book - it’s Cliff’s Notes!

Seeya! Pictures are below.

You know you’re having a good time when it takes almost three weeks to find enough time to write about a trip to New York. That’s not to suggest that our trip to New York was anything less than incredible. When you live in the dirty south, it’s a blessing to be able to visit the melting pot of America, and in my case, become a minority. Our trip was totally awesome.

We saw Rocky Votolato and Limbeck (and some other AWESOME band) play at the Bowery Ballroom. I’ve read a lot of reviews on Pitchfork and Stereogum coming from the Bowery, it was cool to actually be there. Rocky was an awesome show. The opener, Limbeck, was even better. So we found some new music. That whole night was awesome - we walked down to… Helens? And met up with Cat Chow (our reason for being in New York was to drop off artwork to Cat Chow). Cat was fun, Cat’s boyfriend Patrick is totally awesome, their whole crowd was cool. And we were incredibly drunk. And walked home like 20 blocks. I don’t know how we did that. But even that was awesome.

It wasn’t awesome when I went to get the car the next day and found a parking ticket on it. And it wasn’t awesome when I had to drive around for like an hour while the hotel couldn’t get a credit card authorized for Diana in the lobby. But we did find an iPhone line somewhere around the campus of NYU. It was like… 300+ people, several blocks long, at 10 AM. And this set the tone for the rest of MY day. I feel bad for Diana, who had to bask in my misery as we were turned down of an iPhone in Queens after waiting in like for 3 hours. I was probably a total bummer to the world, until we got to the 5th Ave. Apple Store and were greeted by Starbucks-ish Apple employees cheering for those who just bought an iPhone.

Saturday morning we met up with Grant Hunnicutt and Brett (aka Blognut) at a doughnut shop. The plan was to do some thrift shopping for most of the day. We actually ended up being blown away ALL DAY LONG with Grant’s wholesome, dedicated shopping techniques. If you never get to experience this side of Grant, pictures will have to suffice.

That night we went to the Queens Beer Gardens. It’s this big outdoor pavilion with tables everywhere, completely filled with young adults getting wasted. The event is run by Czechs, so there were a few interesting beers on tap - pitches for $14. That’s pretty good for premium beer in NY. We ended up camping at a table with our broadway friends, and did “shaky face” and “motorboat” pictures all night. I think it rained twice that night, but somehow it went unnoticed.

Sunday we took a trip to Brooklyn Heights and met up with Grant Hunnicutt for some “tex mex” lunch on a cool outdoor patio. It was literally the most comfortable day I’ve ever experienced. I’m talking about the weather. It just felt SO… DAMN… GOOD. So we walked over to the big overpass that hangs over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and got the most amazing view of Manhattan. See pictures. That was the perfect end to an awesome weekend in New York.

I love that place. I love Brooklyn Heights. If I ever wanted to not live in Richmond, I would do whatever it takes to live there. Which probably equates to some sort of jewel heist operation. But that sounds kinda cool anyway.Write back. Sike, you can’t, it’s a blog moron!

In rememberance of not only High School Days, and the cookouts (drunkfests) of Marcus’s house in Minneola, but also of college, each of us having a different recollection of the Greek System, we at 608 decided months ago to throw a “FRAT PARTY!.” One would think that planning a party three months in advance would supply ample time to reserve a keg, make a killer playlist (rap, duh), and get your letters cut out.

One would think.

So Saturday rolls around, and like the motivated souls we prove to be again and again, we:

(Matt and Sandy) reserve a keg- actually I think they reserved this on Friday, come to think of it.

(matt and diana) clean the house and move all rugs the the second floor

(diana and matt) pick up the keg, pingpong balls, solo cups, ice

(diana and matt) go to target to get the finishing touches for my costume and tiny cups for jello shooters

(diana and matt) go to the ABC store to get vodka for jello shooters and 6 Apple Pucker airplane bottles… cause come on- this is COLLEGE!

(diana and matt) go to lowe’s for wood and spraypaint for STK sign

(matt and grant) move the diningroom table outside for beerpong and cut out STK letters for our frat sign

(diana) makes jello shooters and vodka lemonade

KILL THE DESKTOP is recorded downstairs while all others nap

(sandy) gets more ice for the keg at da market

WE DRESS…

WE PARTY…

WE RECOVER. (thanks to ZUPA and Josh for the only breakfast in town that can actually absorb all of the Natty Light left in your body the morning after.)

All in all it had all of the signature Frat party aspects. People I haven’t seen in years showed up out of the blue… people arrived after the keg was tapped, and proceeded to take shots of vodka with chasers of A1 (GROSS.) I can’t say that I actually miss college, but it is sure fun to go back every now and then.

A new follicle of muscle, masculinity, and noise has appeared on the face of evil. The resurrection of the 1980 Yamaha XS400 at 608 N 24th st Could only have been accomplished at the hand of such a craftsman as satan, or Grant Mathews.
After a long drawn out process of payment to the previous owner, this bike was delivered to the “CHILL” with expedited service, repairs were made, tank was filled, and the great beast came to life. Now stands the task of registration, inspection and licensing. A small task in the wake of such an accomplishment as bringing a $400 piece of junk back to life.
The time and money spent in this endeavor provide a horizon of fun, great gas mileage, and many tiny parking spaces. Don’t worry mom, I’ll be very careful.
